Description

CLS2021

In 2023, Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI) and Lightsources for Africa, the Americas, Asia, Middle East and Pacific (LAAAMP) co-host a virtual professional development workshop for high school teachers of LAAAMP member countries and other interested participants with the goals as follows:

  • Introduce high school teachers to Siam Photon Laboratory (SPL) and research utilizing synchrotron-radiation based techniques, and how they can connect these concepts to their classrooms.
  • Build up a network of high school teachers interested in contributing to accessible teaching resources relating to synchrotron radiation and its applications.
  • Support and raise opportunities for students to conduct inquiry projects at synchrotron facilities.
  • Contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. 4 Quality Education and No. 17 Partnerships for the Goals.

This workshop will focus on Siam Photon Source (SPS), the biggest synchrotron light source in Southeast Asia and SPL, a synchrotron laboratory at SLRI, Thailand, and synchrotron applications in various fields of research, for instance, medical and energy research. The content of the workshop is related to Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and general Science and Mathematics. The workshop sessions will include lectures on synchrotron and its applications, a virtual tour of SPL and discussion sessions related to education programs to connect synchrotron facilities to the classroom.

The workshop will be run over eight 60-minute sessions at 7PM in Thailand (UTC/GMT +7) on weekdays during July 10-19, 2023. The high school teachers would have opportunity to meet teachers and researchers from different countries to form an international community for future collaborations.
